Meghalaya


As the name signifies, abode of Clouds is an Indian State. It was formed in 1972 from Assam. Meghalaya spreads its beauty in approx. 22,700 sq. Kms. It is also known as Land of Waterfalls.

Meghalaya was named as Scotland of East India Region by the British Imperials during the time of British rule in India.

Meghalaya is famous for its Monsoons, Natural Waterfalls, scenic views etc. Meghalaya is one of the wettest place found in India.

In the Khasi Hills and Garo Hills, Neolithic sites were discovered so far and peoples from the times of Neolithic period lived in this place.

6 Best places to visit in Meghalaya

1) Seven Sister Falls / Nohsngithiang Falls / Mawsmai Falls



The Seven Sister Falls or Nohsngithiang Falls or Mawsmai Falls is actually a seven segmented waterfalls, flows simultaneously side by side on the top of limestone hills is situated near Mawsmai Village in East Khasi Hill District of Meghalaya. The village is just 1 km from the Falls.

This waterfall is one of the tallest waterfall of India having height of approx. 314 metres and width of 69.8 metres. This waterfall on the Khasi Hills looks so magnificent and in the rainy season, it flows with its full potential and dazzle in the sunlight.

2) Dawki



The Dawki River also known as Umngot River is a river most famous for its crystal clear water situated in the flows in Dawki area in the Jaintia Hills. The town is in west Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

This town is also served as the trade town between the two countries i.e. Indian and Bangladesh.

The Dawki River or Umngot River is one of the India’s cleanest river. Also it is used for fishing by the local Fishermans. A bridge over the umngot river also known as Dawki Bridge was constructed in 1932 by the Britishers is also a site of interest.

In order to meet with the daily demands of Electricity, the Meghalaya Government in 2021 plans to construct a Dam on this river. But this was strongly opposed by the local villagers because they thought that the Dam disturbs the Tourism of the place and after sometimes eventually the idea was scrapped.
 

3) Double-decker Living Root Bridge



Double-Decker Living Root Bridge also known as Umshiang Double-Decker Living Root Bridge is a living root bridge in the State of Meghalaya. It is a kind of suspension bridge which is formed by the living plant roots. These root bridges formed by the rubber fig trees by the persons of mountainous terrain.

These bridges were constructed by the persons of Khasi tribe, ancient rubber trees used in the construction of these bridges. These rubber trees mostly seen and founded in this Eastern India Region. These bridges is constructed in the manner that they joints with each other to forms a bridge over a river.

The strength of the bridge depends on its age. More the age of the tree and its roots stronger the holding capacity of the Bridge.

One can reach the Bridge by trekking approx. 45 kilometres from Cherrapunji.

This bridge is at the height of 1400 feet and the length of the bridge is approx. 75 metres.

Atleast it takes a minimum fifteen years for a root bridge to get strong enough to hold the weight of the persons and with the time, its gets stronger and more stronger.

It is also believed that the age of some root bridges are more than 500 years.

4) Nohkalikai Falls



The Nohkalikai Falls is one the tallest waterfall near Sohra, the wettest place of India at the height of approx. 340 metres in the Indian State of Meghalaya.

The water from the rains collected on the summit of a small plateau is the feeder of this waterfall and at the bottom of it, water is collected in a pool and looks like green in colour.

December to February is the month of less rains, plunging of water is less in this time of the year.

5) Phea phea falls



This is two-tiered waterfall. We can experience one by hiking for some 16-20 minutes upwards to reach there.

This looks like a towering waterfall plunged into a blue looked pool with rocks and mountains with natural greenery made the place a natural wonder or a Paradise.

At a distance of around 80 kms. from Shillong, one can reach Phea Phea Falls. It is 20 kms away from Jowai town.

The Phea Phea falls is at a short distance from the Paradise Adventure Camp.

This place is full with natural beauty and the view of plunged water is most astonished. Beautiful surroundings and soothing waves makes this place a Paradise.

Phe Phe comes from Jaintia and the meaning of Phe Phe is Paradise. It is no doubt that this place is as beautiful as its name.

6) Shillong





Shillong also known as Yeddo or Lewduh city is a hill station located in the Indian State of Meghalaya. This place is also known as Scotland of East India by Britishers because of the hills around the town.

Here, in this place the weather conditions in summers goes around 23 degrees and in winters around 4 degrees. The weather here is typically pleasant and free from pollution in all times of the year. In this area, the summers are cool and wetty and winters are very cool and dry. Rains here starts from June and ends in October ending.
